ALAN DOYLE

Alan Doyle—actor, producer, best-selling author, and best known as lead singer for Newfoundland’s beloved Great Big Sea these past 20+ years—hardly needs an introduction. With five solo albums under his belt, Doyle has been touring the world with his ace six-piece band for the last decade. In late 2014, Doyle released his best-selling memoir Where I Belong, followed by A Newfoundlander In Canada released in October 2017, and All Together Now released in November 2020.

Amidst these projects, Doyle found time to write music for and appear on CBC’s Republic of Doyle, guest on CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries, a role in 2014’s Winter’s Tale and 2010’s Robin Hood. With his 2022 live album Here, Tonight and a JUNO nomination for his 2021 album Back to the Harbour, Doyle chalks up a lot of where he is right now to luck. “I’m the luckiest guy I’ve ever even heard of,” he says. “This was all I ever wanted, a life in the music business, singing concerts.”

Doyle hails from Petty Harbour, NL, and formed Great Big Sea in 1993 with Sean McCann, Bob Hallett, and Darrell Power, in which they fused traditional Newfoundland music with their own pop sensibilities. Their nine albums, double-disc hits retrospective, and two DVD releases have all been declared Gold or Platinum and have sold a combined 1.2 million copies in Canada.

OPENING ACT: MARIEL BUCKLEY

Mariel Buckley’s signature brand of angst-ridden alt-folk has quickly established her as one of the most satiating artists with a modern take on roots music.

Buckley’s refreshing and reaffirming candor has enraptured audiences since the release of her 2018 debut album, Driving In The Dark. Buckley’s 2022 Polaris Music Prize nominated sophomore album, Everywhere I Used To Be, achieved formidable critical acclaim. Produced by Marcus Paquin, the evolution of Buckley’s music resonates with gritty emo-esque guitars, driving deep-grooves, soaring pedal guitar and synths, buoyed by Buckley’s charmingly vulnerable honey soaked vocals. “Everywhere I Used To Be is replete with dogged determination and a sense of purpose” – No Depression.

Her live journey has been a strong, steady climb of including North American and European tours, shows with k.d. Lang, Orville Peck, the Bros Landreth and coveted performances at SXSW (TX), AmericanaFest (TN), Jackalope Jamboree (OR), and the prestigious Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg Folk Fests.

"an amazing place for a concert"

The Summer Concert Series & Great Big Weekend is held at one of Canada’s most spectacular venues – the Badlands Amphitheatre located in Drumheller, Alberta (1.5 hours from Calgary). Surrounded by the ancient hills of the Canadian Badlands, this incredible place has clear sight lines and superior acoustics.  The Badlands Amphitheatre is a non-profit arts and culture society operating from the values of community, creation, and celebration.

Previous concerts: Tom Cochrane, Blue Rodeo, Randy Bachman, Corb Lund, Jann Arden,  Barenaked Ladies,  Johnny Reid, The Dead South, Reuben and the Dark with Bullhorn Singers,  Allison Russell,  and The Bros. Landreth.

The Badlands Amphitheatre also hosts Roots, Blues & Barbecue – a 5 band, 5 hour celebration of music and food held every September.
