PERFORMANCE NOTES: BALLET IN THE BADLANDS

Enjoy an unforgettable evening at the spectacular Badlands Amphitheatre, where the breathtaking natural scenery sets the stage for an extraordinary night of ballet. The high-spirited romance of Don Quixote, Act 3 is joined by the bold contemporary works DEA and BOLERO, culminating in the world premiere of BEYOND–a brand new creation by Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia.

Don Quixote, Act 3

Choreography: Francesco Ventriglia | Music: Ludwig Minkus

A vibrant celebration of love and joy, Don Quixote, Act 3 brings the wedding festivities of Kitri and Basilio to life with dazzling choreography and playful humour. Following its acclaimed world premiere in May, this high-energy ballet returns bursting with colour, romance, and charm—delighting audiences once again in the stunning setting of the Badlands.

DEA

Choreography: Maria Konrad | Music: Karen LeFrak

DEA explores the strength and grace of the feminine spirit through fluid, contemporary movement. Centered around a goddess figure who embodies both vulnerability and power, this emotionally charged piece leaves a lasting impression of resilience and beauty.

BOLÉRO

Choreography: Francesco Ventriglia | Music: Maurice Ravel featuring Massimo Margaria

Set to Ravel’s hypnotic score, BOLERO explores the universal longing for human connection. Inspired by the surreal worlds of Giorgio de Chirico, this work creates a dreamlike atmosphere where isolation, desire, and the search for meaning unfold through powerful, expressive movement.

BEYOND (World Premiere)

Choreography: Francesco Ventriglia

Making its world premiere at the Badlands Amphitheatre, BEYOND is an exhilarating new work by Francesco Ventriglia, originally created for a prestigious dance festival in Trois-Rivières. This bold, contemporary piece pushes the boundaries of movement and emotion, inviting audiences to journey beyond the known and discover what lies on the other side of possibility.

"a Canadian gem"

The Badlands Amphitheatre is one of Canada’s most extraordinary venues—a 2,500-seat natural bowl stage set in the heart of the Canadian Badlands, just 1.5 hours from Calgary. Operated by a non-profit arts and culture society, the Amphitheatre presents a wide range of programming rooted in community, creation, and celebration.

While the Badlands Amphitheatre is known for hosting some of Canada’s best-loved musicians—Tom Cochrane, Blue Rodeo, Serena Ryder, William Prince, Barenaked Ladies, and many more—it is also a destination for powerful theatrical events. This is the home of the Badlands Passion Play, now in its 30th season, and the site of Alberta’s first full-length outdoor opera performed under the open sky.

Whether it’s a summer concert, a dramatic performance, or Alberta Ballet’s upcoming production, the focus is always on creating unforgettable live experiences in a setting like no other.
